**[[Value Chain Mapping]]** is a technique applied over [[Porter's Value Chain|Value Chains]], for extracting more operational detail, modularity, and efficiency from a business's value chains, and the capabilities and enablers required to deliver them. ^about
The technique can be very roughly summarised as:
1. Identify your value propositions
2. Identify your value chains (typically as rows)
3. Step out your value chains (the characteristic left-to-right chevrons)
4. Identify the capabilities required to enable each step
From where we then able to:
1. Identify, genericise, and/or introduce commonality between steps; and
2. Identify opportunities for management and optimisation horizontally (through the chain) or vertically (through a step or capability)
